I’m currently in the final stages of the loop for a senior commercial role at OpenAI. Coming from a large, structured Big Tech background where I built several 0-to-1 operational functions.
While the opportunity and mission are undeniably exciting, I have a few genuine reservations and would love candid insight from current or former employees:
The Super-Commute & WLB: The role requires ~3 days/week on-site in SF. I’d be flying up weekly from SoCal. In practice, is this cadence respected, or does it inevitably creep into weekends and off-days? What is the actual burnout rate for non-eng teams?
Ambiguity vs. Respect: The org is clearly in high-growth build mode. Are commercial/ops builders treated as true strategic partners by engineering and research teams, or is it an uphill battle to gain traction against red-tape skepticism?
Compensation Bands (L5/L6 Equivalent): What does top-of-market look like for senior non-engineering leads? Specifically interested in: Base salary ranges PPU / equity grant expectations Flexibility on signing bonuses or commute/travel support
