Google tests buying from Walmart-owned Flipkart through Gemini and AI Mode in India

Google is testing a new feature in India that allows users to purchase products directly from Walmart-owned Flipkart through Gemini and AI Mode. This initiative expands Google's AI services beyond product discovery into direct transactions. The company has been developing technology for AI-driven purchases, including the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard enabling AI agents to interact with retailers throughout the shopping journey, including checkout. UCP also allows shoppers to transfer items to a retailer’s site to complete a purchase.

This marks Google's first direct integration of AI services for transactions with a major retailer like Flipkart, unlike earlier efforts focused on product discovery.
