OpenAI's ChatGPT, xAI's Grok, and Anthropic's Claude all experienced outages around the same time on Thursday, but are now back online. ChatGPT began returning error messages around 11 AM ET, with its status page indicating "elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex." Grok's outage started earlier, around 9:30 AM ET, affecting Android, iOS, and web users, displaying an "overloaded" message. xAI attributed Grok's issue to an outage at its Memphis data center, and has since resolved it.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, xAI’s Grok, and Anthropic’s Claude are back online after they all began experiencing issues around the same time on Thursday. At about 11AM ET, ChatGPT started returning error messages for users trying to use the chatbot, with its status page saying there were “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex.”
In addition to preventing users from having conversations with ChatGPT, the outage affected logins, file uploads, voice mode, search, deep research, image generation, and more. The incident occurred while OpenAI teased the launch of Astra, its new AI model .
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, Claude Code, and the Claude API went down around the same time, with technical staff member CJ Avilla saying an “infrastructure issue” caused a partial outage across its services. Anthropic resolved the problem at around 12:15PM ET.
Grok similarly began experiencing an outage across Android, iOS, and web at 9:30AM ET. Upon trying to prompt the chatbot on X, it returned a message saying: “This model is overloaded right now. Please try again shortly or pick a different model.” xAI has since fixed the issue, which the company linked to an outage at its Memphis data center.
It’s not clear what went wrong at all three companies, or if the issues were somehow related. The Verge has reached out to OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic with requests for comments but didn’t immediately hear back.
Update, September 3rd: Updated to note that ChatGPT, Claude , and Grok outages have been resolved.
