The Fruit Fly didn't learn to play mario bros 3 yet
A simulation of the full FlyWire fruit-fly connectome, comprising 138,639 LIF neurons and 15.1M connections, was tasked with playing Super Mario Bros. 3. Utilizing 10,855 visual-input neurons and 41,692 central/descending readout neurons, along with PPO + self-imitation over 378,000 training decisions, the simulated fly's best performance was reaching a distance of 2,083. It occasionally crossed the first pipe but ultimately converged to jumping vertically, failing to learn to play the game.
This report uniquely details the specific neuron counts and connection numbers used in a fruit-fly connectome simulation, unlike other general discussions of AI game-playing.
