A study tracked AI code usage among 13 heavy users for a month, analyzing approximately 1 billion tokens. The findings indicate a near tie between Claude Code and Codex, with most users employing both. The top single models observed were opus 5.5 (22%) and gpt-5.6-sol (20%), followed by opus 5 and gpt-6-astra. This suggests a diverse and flexible approach to AI coding tools among experienced developers.

I've been collecting daily token counts (from the local usage logs, no prompts or code) from a small group of people who code with AI every day. ~1B tokens so far, so here's what came out of it:
- codex 46%, claude code 44%, opencode 9%. way closer than I expected
- 8 of the 13 use both. of those, 5 lean codex and 3 lean claude
- claude users burn more per day they actually use it, ~4.7M tokens vs ~3.6M for codex
- the weekly lead keeps flipping. claude won 3 of 5 weeks, and codex's overall lead is mostly one week where one person went absolutely nuts
- top single model is opus 5.5 (22%), then gpt-5.6-sol (20%), opus 5 and gpt-6-astra
caveats: 13 people is tiny, one heavy user skews everything, and this doesn't count cache reads (which would make claude's numbers way bigger).
curious if this matches what you see. are you mostly on one tool or switching between them? and if you switch, what makes you pick one for a given task?
