Why AI Isn’t Ready to Tackle Our Convoluted Genomes
The human genome, with its 3 billion DNA building blocks, presents a complex puzzle that AI is not yet equipped to fully tackle. While the Human Genome Project (1990-2003) deduced the entire sequence, only about 2 percent consists of actual genes. Chromosomes, often depicted as compact X-shapes, are typically unwound into a tangled mess of chromatin when not actively dividing. This chromatin has an organized chaos, with densely packed heterochromatin silencing genes and loose euchromatin allowing gene accessibility.
This report highlights the current limitations of AI in understanding the human genome, unlike previous discussions that focused on AI's potential in genomics.
