AI governance is not a policy document
Angela Lipps was jailed for nearly six months after facial recognition technology falsely linked her to bank fraud in North Dakota, a state she claims she had never visited. During her incarceration, she lost her residence, car, and other personal property, missing significant family events and her 50th birthday. She was allegedly denied medication and dentures, and after her release, she experienced ongoing trauma, anxiety, and panic attacks, also losing her dog, Social Security income, health insurance, and access to doctors. This incident highlights issues with trusting AI, similar to a case where a false cargo identification report, described as “entirely false,” nearly led to a military operation.
This report moves beyond typical policy discussions to highlight the severe personal consequences of AI failures, unlike most accounts focusing on systemic or abstract risks.
