Show HN: TerrainSR – fast, realistic heightmap upscaling model
TerrainSR is a fast, realistic heightmap upscaling model developed to enhance lower-resolution 100m maps for a real-scale historical strategy game. It addresses the impracticality of using massive 10m datasets, which would be hundreds of gigabytes and require extensive manual artifact removal. By using 100m data, TerrainSR can add plausible terrain detail, smoothing out modern features like roads and buildings, though it may occasionally interpret steep building data as hills. The model is trained using data from swisstopo, Kartverket, IGN, and USGS, with Copernicus DEM, ESA WorldCover, and OpenStreetMap as inputs.
