OpenAI is not watermarking text output outside the EU. Will Anthropic follow suit?
OpenAI announced that it will implement invisible watermarking for eligible ChatGPT and Codex text output exclusively within the European Union, stating this will not be a global default at launch. This decision raises questions about whether Anthropic, a competitor, will follow suit. Anthropic had previously indicated a global application of watermarking due to the lack of a region-scoping method, but OpenAI's move demonstrates that regional implementation is feasible.
Unlike its earlier stance of applying watermarking globally, OpenAI is now implementing it only in the EU, which could pressure Anthropic to adopt a similar regional approach.
