If OpenAI actually achieves superintelligence first, why would it ever give the rest of us access to it?

OpenAI recently said one of its goals is to “give everyone on Earth a personal AGI.” I genuinely hope that future happens.
But I keep getting stuck on a fairly simple question: if OpenAI actually develops something we would reasonably call superintelligence, why would it give us direct access to it?
Imagine an internal model that isn't just somewhat better than the public frontier, but is capable of:
- substantially improving the architecture and training of its successors;
- accelerating chip, data-center and algorithm design;
- discovering valuable new science and technology;
- finding and closing security vulnerabilities;
- and making exceptionally good strategic decisions about what to build next.
At that point, the model itself may be the most valuable strategic asset ever created.
Giving millions of people access to it wouldn't just mean launching a better ChatGPT. It could mean giving competitors access to the same intelligence advantage that allowed you to get ahead in the first place.
And you don't need to assume bad intentions for an organization to keep it private.
Safety would be a reason.
National security would be a reason.
Fear of proliferation would be a reason.
Protecting a technological lead would be a reason.
Even an organization sincerely committed to benefiting humanity could conclude that the responsible thing was to keep the superintelligence internal and use it to create the AI products that everyone else is allowed to use.
Everyone might benefit enormously from those products. But that's very different from everyone having access to the intelligence itself.
This becomes especially interesting in light of what's happening with open models.
Right now, models like Kimi and others imply that capability may be increasingly difficult to contain. Proprietary labs move the frontier; open models catch up; techniques diffuse; costs fall.
But what if that dynamic holds only until someone gets far enough ahead?
If an internal superintelligence can help build a still better superintelligence, perhaps the leader starts moving the frontier faster than everyone else can catch up.
Then the pattern could change from:
frontier → diffusion → everyone catches up
to:
