There are probably thousands of useful feature requests and small quality-of-life improvements being suggested by ChatGPT users every day. Many of these don't necessarily require frontier AI research — some could potentially be implemented by capable software developers, UX designers, testers, and product people working alongside OpenAI's existing teams.
This could become both a product-development opportunity and a job opportunity.
For example, OpenAI could create a Community Product Development team/program where people can:
identify highly requested improvements
prototype and develop smaller features
work with OpenAI's existing engineering/product teams
test ideas with users
submit implementations for review
improve existing functionality rather than only working on new frontier models
Importantly, this wouldn't mean giving external developers unrestricted access to OpenAI's systems. OpenAI could establish clear technical, security and review processes, while allowing qualified developers to contribute within controlled environments.
