Shopify opens checkout to browser-based AI agents

Shopify is embracing AI agents for purchases, contrasting with retailers like Amazon and Adidas that block them. Shopify already supports server-to-server AI agents via its hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. It is also developing WebMCP for browser-based agents. Both MCP and WebMCP utilize Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which standardizes product discovery, cart building, and checkout processes, facilitating AI-driven e-commerce experiences.
